January 2019 Newsletter
Happy New Year to all Burley Bridge Association members and supporters!

Membership fees for 2019 now due
Our membership year runs from January to December. We would be grateful for all those members paying the annual £10 household membership fee to send their payment either by cheque payable to the Burley Bridge Association to David Asher using the form at the end of this newsletter, or directly by bank transfer to our HSBC account no 11104608 sort code 40-25-30. Please give your surname as the reference. All membership fees, including for Life Membership, go into our general account which pays for running costs for the BBA, including expenses incurred for fundraising (printing event posters, tickets etc).  Donations can also be made via Paypal using the Donate button on the website. All donations received go into our fundraising account to pay towards construction and maintenance cost for the bridge.  We can also, of course, recoup gift aid on donations providing the donor is a tax payer.

Design and development - where are we up to?
The design work done to date by Rambolls was carried out to enable the BBA to obtain planning approval. It includes general overall elevations and plans which show the final form and location of the bridge. It also includes various essential technical information to enable the planners to understand the proposals more fully such as a broad specification of materials to be used and information used to establish, for example, the level of the bridge deck above a fixed datum.

Having been successful last summer with the renewal of our planning permission and the resolution of various legal issues, we can now proceed with confidence to escalate our fundraising efforts to finance design and development, and then construction.

Tentative costings were prepared some time ago by Rambolls but it is now necessary to carry out further investigation and calculation to enable more accurate figures to be produced. This will include an assessment of “buildability”, a more detailed look at the junction of the bridge and banks, development of design details (suspension system, foundations, etc.).

As well as liaising with the original bridge designers, we are in the process of identifying other suitably experienced civil engineering contractor who will be able to advise on a variety of matters such as possible methodologies, access, site establishment, and other practical matters. Following on from these discussions, the design will be developed to enable more accurate costings to be prepared which will take into account all the issues outlined above.  Discussions have also taken place with Community Action Bradford about major grant applications. As a first step they are currently advising the BBA on applications to fund this more detailed design and development work.
Fundraising news
Our two events in the autumn, the Social Club rock concert and the Queens Hall folk concert were very successful. Thanks to everyone who attended, and of course to all six bands who played without cost. In total we raised £2000, including from the raffle and bar sales.

Tickets for our next two fundraising events are already on sale! You can book online at http://www.ticketsource.co.uk/burley-bridge-association or in person at the Coffee Station Burley, Just Books on Market Square in Otley, or Just Books on Brook Street in Ilkley.

Steeton Male Voice Choir
Firstly, Steeton Male Voice Choir are giving a concert at St. Mary’s Parish Church in Burley on Saturday 13 April. Doors open at 7.00 for the performance starting 7.30.  This prestigious choir is one of the best in Yorkshire and their concerts often sell out, so please book your tickets early to save disappointment on the night! Tickets are £10 and include light refreshments.  The acoustics in the church are ideal for the choir, who specifically requested the venue as the best in Burley to show off their fine vocals! Check them out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Steeton-Male-Voice-Choir-103770713328335/
Secondly a folk concert by nationally acclaimed singers and musicians Belinda O’Hooley and Heidi Tidow is being held at the Queens Hall in Burley on Saturday 11 May.  Doors open at 7.15 for a performance starting at 8.00, and we will be providing a bar. Belinda and Heidi come from Marsden and are both keen walkers when they have the opportunity (they are frequently touring), so are keen to support the bridge project.  As Radio 2 ‘Best Folk Duo’ finalists in 2018, they are rated very highly by many in the folk music business, with Mojo magazine saying they are ‘One of British folk music’s mightiest combinations’, and the Independent saying their music is ‘defiant, robust, northern, poetical, political folk music for the times we live in’.   Tickets cost £14.  Again, early booking is recommended as most of their Autumn tour dates were fully booked, particularly at Yorkshire venues. Belinda O'Hooley and Heidi Tidow
We are currently planning a third event for 2019, a jazz concert to be held at Burley Social Club during the autumn.  The event will feature three local bands, and we will be provide more information in our next newsletter.

As well as applying for the large grants necessary to complete the project, community fundraising and donations from members and supporters will continue to play a vital contribution. This is because most funding bodies require evidence of local match funding, and some even require a specific percentage of their grant offer to be raised elsewhere.

Legacies: A recent donation arising from a bequest made by a member in their will prompts us to remind members and supporters of this option. What better way to ensure future generations benefit from the freedom to safely cross the river and expand their recreational horizons!

Annual General Meeting 2019
We will return to Burley Library for our Annual General Meeting this year on Wednesday 8 May, starting at 7.30.  Following the business meeting, Paul Burgess, Manager of Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will give a talk about the work of the AONB. As the main point of the bridge is to enable safe year round and immediate access to the stunning countryside and historic sites that comprise Nidderdale AONB, it should be an informative and fascinating talk. Please come!

Visit our fantastic Website!
Please check out our recently updated website.  We are grateful to BBA trustee Keith Penny for all his hard work on the website over the past few months, which has created a fresh, lively and more accessible platform to showcase the work of the association. A recent addition has been to provide details of two simple walks to be had on the north bank.  Please let us know what you think and send us any ideas for how we can improve it further. http://www.burleybridge.com

Askwith Arms
Askwith Arms reopens
We are pleased to report that the Askwith Arms has reopened for business. They are apparently hoping to attract walkers, so we hope the new owners will be keen to see the bridge completed.  Please help to make the business a success – and feel free to give Burley and the bridge a plug!
DalesBus fundraising event Friday 1 February
Friends of DalesBus work to keep bus services running in the Yorkshire Dales providing benefit to walkers as well as local residents. Please consider supporting their fundraising folk concert at Coopers Bar and Brasserie, Guiseley this coming Friday, 1 February.
