BURLEY BRIDGE HIKERS CONFOUND THE WEATHER

Burley Bridge Hike 2011 Results

Walkers on the 21-mile Burley Bridge Hike last Saturday [16 July] found conditions which were probably the worst in the event's 15-year-history. Heavy rain dogged the entrants as they tackled a route which started at Ghyll Royd School at Burley-in-Wharfedale.

The hike has previously been held in November and it was thought a summer date might provide decent weather!

A circuit round the Wharfedale moors included a crossing of Ilkley Moor and three miles by the Leeds to Liverpool canal. However there were no mishaps and only two walkers retired.

Members of the Burley Bridge Association manned checkpoints along the way, with refreshments available at some. Radio control was maintained by Keighley Raynet. On their return to Ghyll Royd the walkers found a welcoming supply of food.

The event is not a race but some runners generally take part and Toni Melechi and Jez Hellewell from Burley completed the route in 3 hours 36 minutes. The first lady home was Angela Donlan from Barnoldswick in 4 hours 38 minutes.

All proceeds will benefit the campaign to build a suitable bridge over the River Wharfe at Burley.
